Watching documentary:
Thomas sutcliffe states 'films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment.while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible'.
By this statement,it is shown that Thomas believes the audience needs to be attracted to the film instantly through the film opening as this is what would make them continue to watch the film.for example,if a film opening was not interesting and made the audience bored instantly they wouldn't continue to watch the film.
According to the director Jean beineix, the risks of 'instant arousal' is that the film opening then causes the audience to have an expectation of he film.If the film opening is of good features and good quality then the audience will assume the film will be better giving it an expectation to live up too.
'A good beginning must make the audience feel that it does know nearly enough yet,and at the same time make sure that it does know too little'.This statement is true as a good opening should give you a hint of the genre along with a rough idea of the setting and characters involved but not give away the plot of the film.
Stanley kauffmann describes a classic opening as a shot/pan of the city where the plot takes place in.This works well as it gives the audience an experience of the everyday life situation making the movie realistic and doesn't look like it was set up off a script.
Kyle coopers title sequence to the film 'seven' was so effective as the use of titles on an animation displayed a hint to the film, foreshadowing what will happen later on.
