RESEARCH Blog Post 6 - Beatricse Lazar - Analysing two Title Sequences

ANALYSE TWO FILM TITLE SEQUENCES

In this post I will analyse two film's title sequences. The first one is KILL BILL VOLUME 1 and the second is KILL BILL VOLUME 2. I know these films are connected however interestingly their title sequences are completly different and so I find it interesting to compare the two in terms of similarities and differences.

Kill Bill Volume 1

Its title sequence is opening with a black and white scene of the movie with the actor Uma Thurman. In the other second someone shoots her and a black blank background comes up. After this, the music starts playing and shows the name of the director "Quentin Tarantino". His name comes up in red with splashing blood such as the other credits. The red colour makes a really nice contrast with the background.

The other credits are coming up with capital letters on a bright yellow background which relates to the film's poster. Then the title, KILL BILL, comes up on the screen, each letter after the other in black and "Volume 1" under it with smaller red letters which is a suggestion that there is going to be another film in the future. The other actors are presented with moving images of their faces (closeups) from the film. The second main actor, David Carradine, is presented last with a moving image of his arm (not his face) and then his character's name "Bill" comes up with capital letters and the splashing blood covers him. This can show that he will die at the end.

All of these colours are representing violence and the feeling of revenge, fight and death which is what this film is about. This title sequence is really graphical and so it makes it powerful.

Kill Bill Volume 2

This title sequence starts with music at the background. Then the same black and white scene of the movie comes up just like in the other title sequence however, it shows a  bit more of it. In the other second, Uma Thurman pops up on the screen in a car driving it. She strats to talk to the audience about what happend whit her to introduce the story of the film to the ones who has not seen the Volume 1 too. The interesting point is that the first movie ends with this scene: her driving. This scenne ends with her saying, "I am gonna kill Bill", which contains the title itself. Then with huge white text, Vol. 1, rolls up on the screen.

The whole title sequence is in black and white which has a completly different atmosphere than the other one had. However, with Uma Thurman's speech it has the same kind of feeling of violence and revenge.
