RESEARCH Blog Post 15 - Beatricse Lazar - Sound

WHY IS SOUND SO IMPORTANT IN A FILM?

- Sound is what you hear (talking, music, other narratives etc.).
- Soundscape is a combination of sounds (layering the sounds).
- Sound design is all about editing and creating.
- Suspending disbelief is about to swich reality off in audience's minds to enjoy the film.

In class, we watched a title sequoence twice. Ones without sound, and the other time with sound to test George Lucas' theory which is that 'Sound is 50%'.

When we watched the opening scene for the first time, it was not that eye-catching, even more, it was boring. It was also confusing and I did not feel conftible watching it because the film's genre was not clear and the film has not created a particular atmosphere around me just to ignore the world around me for the time. Shortly, my impression was: 'This is a bad film.'

The second time's screening with sound was a lot different! While watching the sequence, I felt enjoyment because I liked the music and it created a seriuos atmosphere around me. There were loads of different sounds for example, music, cars, trains, phone ringing, talking, dialogs and motifs. From this experience I strongly agree with Lucas' theory as sound made the clip feel shorter, gives a clue of the genre and identity of the film and creates a special atmosphere around the audience.
