BLOG POST 13 - RESEARCH-analyse 3 title sequence (13)

Within my chosen genre, thriller,I analysed 3 title sequences exploring the elements that relate to that specific genre.
The first film I analysed was Se7en.In the Se7en we explored the Macro elements. There was no key plot introduced but the image of the skin being cut off of a finger suggests that the person could be destroying their finger prints which could be a main part of the film. No characters are introduced either, however half way through the title opening there is a shot of  man with a knife in his head along with old pictures of young boys.Only men are presented in the opening and they are represented as gruesome and criminals.
We also explored the Micro elements of Se7en.The use of camera skills were not showing a wide range of shorts in the title opening. They showed use of slow movement and many close ups. They used a faster motion at some points in the opening and used a white clear font over a dark background. Cuts were used from motion to black screens quickly. The title credits also had an effect on them which made them flicker whilst appearing or changing. There was also use of fast cuts from black screens to an image. The same setting of a dark room with books, pictures and weapons was seen throughout. Props of blades and guns were used to create tension along with the dark lighting.Sound was also a main element explored. There was use of phoney sounds,of a blade, with a fast soundtrack in the back creating tension. There is also a voice over at the end of the film.
This is the order the title credits were displayed.
The second title opening I analysed was 'the usual suspects'. Whilst exploring the Macro elements we noticed that there was no key plot introduced, just the same shot of a lake is displayed throughout the title opening. However, the lake could be a metaphor or hint to what might take place. There are no characters introduced, only a setting which could be the main plot. No social groups are represented as no characters are introduced. We also explored the Micro elements and saw that the whole title opening consisted of a long shot not using any other types of shots. This was an establishing shot. There was no cuts and use of titles on a black screen. The lake was moving in a slow motion and no special effects were used. The same location (the lake)was used throughout. The setting was at night time so was very dark with no lighting used. There was no props, makeup, characters or performance introduced in this title opening. This is the order the title credits are displayed in.

The third title opening I analysed was 'American Horror Story'. We did a Macro Analysis on this title opening and realised that the use of baby pictures, babies, blood, and skeletons suggests that the key plot is a murder or some sort of mystery killing. The burning of babies also foreshadows a death.
No characters are introduced, only shots of babies are shown along with old fashioned pictures of women. The social groups that are represented are babies. They are seen as a target as they are vulnerable and need to be cared for. We also did a Micro Analysis. Long shots of the setting were used along with many close ups.The title opening also included the 180 rule using slow movement of the camera. There was very slow movement of shot to shot. Special effects of large title appearing was used. The movement from a blank screen to an image was very fast. This title opening consisted of the location of a shed showing the same setting. There was a broken patio and old baby photos were used as props along with creatures in jars, alcohol and blood. The lighting was very dark and so was the room. No sound effects were used and there was a constant tune creating tension in the background, this was the soundtrack. This is the order the title credits appeared in.
