PLANNING -Blog Post 32 - Which institution/studio will distribute your film - Megan Manigan

A distribution company is responsible for buying the rights of the film, selling as many prints as possible, and attracting the target and wider audience into seeing the film. MThe company 'ploygram' is likely to produce our film.Polygram are Dutch based and owned by Philips, they also collaborate with universal studios.Polygram produce many old films so the marketing tools used are not very recent, such as radio interviews, posters, and small social media.Social media did not have a large role in promoting the productions as ploygram does not produce many films in this modern day.Polygrams products are available on the Internet and DVD format as well as video. This distributor is likely to produce our film as they mainly produce thrillers which follow the same conventions as our film.Examples of Polygrams previous productions would be 'fargo' and 'the game'.Polygram is a mainstream production company.

Another production company is 'unique productions' that has a larger chance in supporting our film. This company is independent. To promote this company we will use social media such as Facebook adverts,Twitter to post links to the trailers, and make an Instagram account that posts on the recent films coming up.Our productions will be available in the format of DVD.Our independent company will not be linked with any other wider company's following the title 'independent'

PLANNING -Post 30- Planning Mise-en-scene Ideas

Task 1:

   Finding and Planning the location and setting;

Task 2:

      Planning costume ideas:

Bella from 'Twilight' -

  • Make up: Light/ pale skin, dark under-eye (vampire look)
  • Wardrobe:  Casual clothes- hoodie, jeans and t shirt

Regina from 'Mean Girls' -

  • Make up: Typical high school girl make up:  lip-gloss, mascara, blush and foundation
  • Wardrobe; Mostly pink, light colours like white, red, pink (warm tones)
Carrie from 'Carrie' -
  • Make up: Natural, no signs of make up, messy hair or just brushed
  • Wardrobe: Young teenage girl- dresses, skirt, shirt (modest)

  • Talulah Green // She's a reckless teenager and is involved in crime and drug related incidents- wrong place at the wrong time
  • Role in title sequence; tries not to get caught, runs away, gets into trouble but doesn't get caught
  • A bad girl
  • Member of a group that's to do with drug dealing, by mistake
The black leather jacket along with the black ripped skinny jeans gives off a rock chick look or someone who is not particularly picky about fashion. Black doesn't stain or isn't just for one occasion, can be worn to any occasion. Black is also hard to notice at night time- to characters advantage. Dark also suggests rebellion and being reckless and so is the teenager herself.

Task 3:

       Planning production- Props

Prop 1: Bracelet

  • Worn on hand (so visible)
  • When being dragged at the end of film opening we see the stalkers bracelet is the same as the young girls'
  • any bracelet
  • Choice of bracelet as it is something a girl would wear (symbolism)
  • Purpose is to make the audience question why the stalker is wearing the same one

Prop 2: Necklace
  • Worn around the neck under the hoodie, but over the t shirt
  • Dangling down when tripping onto the ground, may get caught in the twigs on the ground when about to be dragged
  • The stalker would have to have the same necklace, also to be shown on camera but no face
  • It is symbolism especially fort the audience, hinting a link between the stalker and her

Task 4:

Planning production- Bringing together all mise-en-scene ideas

  • FILM IDEA: Teenage girl is running through the woods (Twilight). She looks back to see if the individual is still chasing her, she hits her face/upper arm on a branch and rips hoodie- signs of bleeding. Flashback appears. She continues running then trips, her necklace or bracelet gets caught on the ground, stalker reaches her and grabs her by the feet, she takes her last breath.
  • KEY PROPS: A bracelet or a necklace worn on her left wrist/ neck. Natural make up. Sweat. Blood when she gets hurt.
  • LOCATIONS: A forest and a candy/toy shop.
  • SETTINGS: Inside the forest. Outside the candy/toy shop as well as the inside.
  • COSTUME: Casual clothing throughout for the main character and her friends in the shop. The stalker wears all black: coat, hat, glasses and shoes.
  • LIGHTING: Dark lighting in the forest but still light enough to see her running, Dim lighting in the shop to make it more sinister. Dark setting outside the dim shop.

PLANNING- Post 28- Analysis of previous student title sequences

The 'Boxing' Film opening title sequence (Favourite)

-Music synchronised with the actions; emphasizing them
-Good use of flashback when knocked down - music altered with sound effect
-Editing went with the sound (when the boxer was getting up)
-The music starts of singular then builds up
-Pre-made, no copyrights or braking the law
-The music made gave a sense of determination and that's what the movie is about (created the right atmosphere)

The 'Girl getting chased by a gang' Film opening title sequence ( Least Favourite)

-Overly dramatic soundtrack
-Does match some actions but it is too chaotic for some scenes
-Does not start of light and build up towards the end
-Continues to be the same, repeats, very packed full of everything
-Doesn't necessarily match the start of the film as there is not much action going on in the moving images that could emphasise them

PLANNING - Blog Post 26 - Who is your target audience?

I looked at two films from the same genre as our film to compare them and see what similarities and differences are there. Here are the videos that I made, of the film, Black Swan Audience Profile and the second film, American Horror Story Audience Profile.

PLANNING -Post 24- Individual idea/outline for a title sequence

Genre:

I have chosen the 'Thriller' Genre; our group and I will recreate a film opening sequence based on a typical thriller opening. Following the order of the title sequences and the time frame, we will try to recreate that.

Initial Plot/ Storyline:

Initially, the main idea behind the opening title sequence involves a forest location in which a teenage girl is going to be filmed running away from her potential killer who turns out to be herself. She starts to run from one end of the forest- the opening, through the woods looking back every once in a while. She will hit her face or arm on a sharp branch consequently resulting in blood escaping her wound, at the same time she will have a flashback, it will end in her tripping over, struggling to get herself up, the mysterious figure catches up with her and grabs her, this is where the shot ends and the title appears as she takes her last breath.

Key character 'types':

The main character in the film opening sequence is a teenage girl who experiences the feelings of anxiety, confusion and is also paranoid and mentally unstable.

The figure dressed in all black with no revealed face is a character that wants to stay mysterious, appears in her flashbacks and is also chasing her through the forest.

      Social Groups I may introduce....

There are only two characters which are the focus in the film opening sequence. Although, when filming the flashback scenes there will be local people present on a busy street or a local shop.

blog post 24-- blog your individual Idea

Genre-
I chose the genre 'thriller' for the title opening my group and I will create. This genre has interesting conventions which makes the process of creating a title sequence very enjoyable and challenging.

Initial plot/story line-
The main location will be a forest where a young girl will be running through, away from a mysterious person. The young girl is unaware who this mysterious person is.She has episodes of flashbacks while she is running and begins to realise she has seen this person before following her around which scares her even more. The girl is confused and worried. The stalker is herself she is paranoid.

Key character types-
The main characters Introduced are a young girl and a 'stalker'.The young girl comes across as scared, confused, paranoid and unstable. She is around 16 years old.
The stalkers face is not shown.
The stalker is a the older future version of the young Girl.

Social groups-
No social groups will be represented as only 2 characters are involved. However there will be scenes when local people from town are involved such as the scene on the busy street and the scene in the local shop.

PLANNING - Blog Post 24 - Blog my own individual idea/ outline for the title sequence

Genre I would Choose
I have chosen the genre Thriller however the others really wanted to do horror. I advise them to do thriller instead because it is much more opened, and can have a really complex story with a true and thoughtful meaning behind it; not just to scare the audience.

The Idea I want to portrait
I looked at the film called HANNA 's title sequence and I thought of doing something like that. It is placed in a forest, and there are some running bits filmed on a way that I find clever and interesting. It would be great to create something like this, with the sound of heartbeat, breath and background noise.
The girl would run in our film from a person (whose face will not reveal clearly) to make a question i  the audience's head. i want the audience to be confused, but become interested in what they watching; and the title sequence to make them watch the whole movie.

Key Character and Social group presented
In the title sequence there will be only one girl presented, however there will be another actor chasing her in the forest scene. In the full film the story will be about that she realises that this person is herself but the audience do not yet because they only watched the title sequence. This storyline would focus on the reaction o people to a person that is suffering with Mental Illnesses.

RESEARCH- post your target audience research homework

In these 3 films different genres are displayed along with different target audiences.A target audience is the group of people a film is aimed at,a specific audience. In the film 'mean girls' from the genre of comedy, the target audience is females aged

genre conventions

I explored the genre 'thriller' which includes the films 'kidulthood' , 'shutter island' ,and 'seven'. These thrillers all had  similar conventions including the target audience and who enjoys to watch films of the this genre. We also discovered that a convention of a thriller is the soundtrack in the title sequence that creates an atmosphere.

blog post 21- Practical remake activity -evaluation

In the process of remaking the title sequence of 'gone girl' I agree that it was successful. It was easy to note down the shots used in the title sequence as we are familiar with them after learning about them and also using a range of shots in our prelim activity. It was easy to storyboard each shot as the shots used were mainly just of a scene easy to find in a street or area with lots of tree's.We chose to use the location of outside college which worked well as we found similar places to the shots used in gone girl, mainly just of buildings, tree's and nature.

We didn't need to change costume as the characters only appeared once and their clothing didn't have an impact on the scene so we didn't need to have the same outfit as the characters in gone girl.Creating the title credits was an easy process as we were taught how to use the software beforehand making it quick and easy to create titles. The titles were also very plain so they didn't take long to create. When deciding on the font we chose a simple plain one that was easy to read and also similar to the one used in gone girl,we chose the font colour as white because it was the best colour to use over dark images and black screens throughout the title sequence. We had the same size titles throughout so it was similar to the title size in gone girl,we also made sure the titles were a reasonable size for the audience to read. The font we chose worked successfully as it wasn't too fancy and hard to read,it was bold, clear and suited the tone of the film. The title credits were placed over the images however they were contrasting, not a part of the images being shown. The title credits were placed so that they were clear and not hidden in the title sequence. If I was to do this task again I would make sure that I used a wider range of shots and made sure I used better camera skills and in one shot the camera is at an angle making the filming bad quality.I would also use a wider range of props to make sure the remake was as similar to the real title sequence as it could be.
